At Violet Wellness Spa in Fair Oaks, we are passionate about helping our patients achieve vibrant health through natural healing and personalized care. In addition to acupuncture, we offer a variety of complementary wellness services, including herbal medicine, cupping, red light therapy, cosmetic acupuncture, guasha, and moxibustion. Rather than simply treating symptoms, we focus on identifying and addressing the underlying imbalances that contribute to illness, pain, and discomfort. This holistic approach supports the body's natural healing abilities while promoting long-term wellness, prevention, and optimal health. This month, we are highlighting two therapies that complement acupuncture: moxibustion and red light therapy. One is rooted in thousands of years of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the other is supported by modern technology and scientific research. Both therapies share the common goal of enhancing circulation, reducing inflammation, accelerating tissue repair, and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.
Moxibustion, commonly referred to as moxa, is a traditional heat therapy that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Its primary purpose is to strengthen qi, or the body's vital energy, improve blood circulation, relieve pain, and promote healing. Moxibustion uses the dried leaves of the Ai Ye plant, also known as Chinese mugwort (Artemisia argyi or Artemisia folium). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this herb is often called "sunshine in a plant" because of its deeply warming and nourishing properties. During treatment, a practitioner lights a compressed moxa stick or brick until it begins to smolder. The glowing herb is then held several inches above the skin, allowing soothing therapeutic heat to penetrate deeply into the tissues without causing burns. Unlike conventional heating pads or hot packs, studies suggest that the radiant heat produced by moxibustion can penetrate several inches beneath the skin, stimulating circulation, increasing oxygen delivery, and encouraging tissue repair. Improved blood flow also helps remove inflammatory waste products that accumulate in damaged tissues, creating an environment that supports faster healing and pain relief.
Modern research is beginning to validate many of the traditional uses of moxibustion. Animal studies by Yali Yin and colleagues have demonstrated that moxibustion may help regulate hormone levels, reduce inflammation, and improve mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell because they generate the energy required for virtually every function in the body. By improving mitochondrial activity, moxibustion may enhance cellular repair, improve vitality, and support overall health. While additional human studies are needed, these findings provide exciting evidence that this ancient therapy may have measurable physiological benefits beyond its long history of clinical use.
Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, moxibustion is frequently prescribed when patients exhibit deficiencies of qi or yang energy. According to TCM theory, insufficient qi can lead to fatigue, weakness, slow healing, and poor resistance to illness. Warming the body's meridians with moxibustion helps restore energy and improve normal physiological function. Patients experiencing allergies, asthma, or weakened immunity due to Lung or Heart Qi deficiency may benefit from moxa applied to the upper back. Those with Spleen Qi deficiency, which may contribute to bloating, poor digestion, muscle weakness, and fatigue, often receive treatment on the abdomen or mid-back. Kidney Qi deficiency may manifest as chronic fatigue, feeling cold, frequent urination, low libido, or weakness in the lower back. In these cases, moxibustion is commonly applied to the lower back or lower abdomen to restore warmth and vitality. Every patient receives an individualized diagnosis, and treatments are customized to address the unique pattern of imbalance rather than simply treating a diagnosis or symptom.
Moxibustion is also widely recognized for its ability to relieve chronic pain. Persistent pain frequently results in reduced circulation caused by inflammation, swelling, muscle tension, and restricted blood flow. As circulation slows, waste products accumulate within the tissues, creating a cycle of ongoing inflammation and discomfort. While ice can be helpful immediately following an acute injury to reduce swelling, prolonged use of cold therapy on chronic conditions may further reduce circulation and delay healing. Moxibustion works in the opposite manner by gently warming the tissues, increasing blood flow, activating anti-inflammatory pathways, and encouraging the body's own repair mechanisms. These benefits are supported by animal research from Xia and colleagues, who demonstrated protective effects of moxibustion on heart tissue in rats with chronic heart failure, highlighting its ability to reduce inflammatory damage and improve circulation throughout the body.
Another innovative therapy offered at Violet Wellness Spa is Red Light Therapy, also known as Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) or Photobiomodulation (PBM). This safe, non-invasive treatment uses carefully selected wavelengths of visible light to stimulate cellular repair, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and promote healthier skin. Different wavelengths produce different biological effects. Blue light is especially effective for reducing acne-causing bacteria and calming inflammatory acne. Yellow light helps reduce redness, improve wound healing, minimize hyperpigmentation, and benefit inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea. Red light penetrates more deeply into the tissues, where it stimulates collagen production, improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes overall skin rejuvenation. Together, these therapeutic wavelengths provide a versatile approach to improving both skin health and tissue healing.
One of the greatest advantages of Low-Level Light Therapy is its excellent safety profile. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight, therapeutic red light does not damage DNA or increase the risk of skin cancer. Instead, specific wavelengths safely penetrate the skin and are absorbed by molecules within cells, where the light energy is converted into biological activity. Researchers continue to investigate exactly how this process works, but current evidence suggests that photobiomodulation helps release nitric oxide from enzymes attached to mitochondria. This allows oxygen to bind more efficiently, restoring mitochondrial energy production and improving cellular function. Scientists have also found that red light therapy creates a very small amount of controlled oxidative stress by generating tiny amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although excessive ROS can damage tissues, these small amounts serve as important signaling molecules that activate cellular repair pathways, reduce inflammation, stimulate growth factors, and encourage the production of healthy collagen and elastin. As a result, the skin becomes healthier, stronger, and more resilient over time.
Red light therapy also plays an important role in supporting a healthy skin microbiome. Blue light has been shown to reduce populations of acne-causing bacteria, making it an effective treatment for inflammatory acne. Current research also suggests that rosacea may be associated with an overgrowth of Demodex mites that naturally live on the skin. When these microscopic mites multiply excessively, the immune system may react with increased histamine release, redness, irritation, and inflammation. Red and blue light therapies work together by reducing Demodex populations while calming the inflammatory response. Many patients notice improvements in redness, healing time, skin texture, and overall complexion following a series of treatments. Increased collagen production can also soften fine lines, improve elasticity, and promote healthier, more youthful-looking skin.
Both moxibustion and red light therapy illustrate how traditional healing practices and modern scientific discoveries can complement one another to support whole-body wellness. Although these therapies work through different mechanisms, they share the common goal of improving circulation, reducing inflammation, enhancing cellular repair, and restoring the body's remarkable ability to heal itself. At Violet Wellness Spa, we believe lasting health comes from addressing the root causes of imbalance rather than simply managing symptoms. By combining time-honored healing traditions with evidence-informed therapies, we strive to help every patient experience greater vitality, improved function, and a higher quality of life.
